Graduate Studies in Physics

Learn - Discover - Achieve

SMU Physics is dedicated to excellence in graduate education for small numbers of students with an emphasis on high-energy particle physics and astrophysics/cosmology. We welcome applicants from around the world and a variety of backgrounds. Candidates in our program receive financial support while in good standing. You can learn more about the careers of our graduate students after earning their degrees from our Alumni information page.

Financial Support

Students admitted to our program receive a competitive assistantship in return for either teaching or research duties. In addition, tuition is covered by the department and health insurance is provided through the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) at SMU. Applicants to our Ph.D. program also receive consideration for university-level fellowships, such as the Mustang Fellowship (which offers a larger assistantship that replaces the departmental one) or the University Ph.D. Fellowship, which increases the departmental assistantship. Candidates who match well to the requirements of these programs will be nominated for them. Learn more about SMU's Graduate Student Funding opportunities!
