PHYS 1010 - Fall 2020: Task #1
Download the game
"A slower speed of light"
from MIT and play it. A Slower Speed of Light is a first-person game
prototype in which players navigate a 3D space while picking up orbs
that reduce the speed of light in increments.
WARNING: some visual effects in the "Slower speed of light" are
similar to strobe lights. A fraction of students who are predisposed
to photosensitivity may experience dizziness or physical
discomfort. DO NOT play the game if you suspect you may be
photosensitive. If you do not feel well, look away from the screen and
take a break or stop playing altogether.
- Pick up 100 orbs to complete the game. It can take up to 30
minutes on the first try; you might take 2-3 tries.
- The speed of light is decreased with every orb you pick up. Carefully
document any unusual effects, such as visual distortions or changes in
color. Explain as many as you can based on what you've learned in this
or other courses.
- Take a screenshot of your best time that it took you to complete the
game (in the observer's frame).
- Email your description and the screenshot to scalise@smu.edu
before midnight on 22 September 2020.
