PHYS 4392 Learning Outcomes - F13

At the conclusion of PHYS 4392, the competent student will be able to, in a time-limited, closed book exam-like setting, and in homework exercises:

• calculate the gradient of scalar functions, and the curl and gradient of vector functions;
• transform integrals using the theorems of Gauss and Stokes;
• calculate the electrostatic potential V(x) from a knowledge of the electrostatic electric field and by using the multipole expansion in tandem with a knowledge of the charge distribution;

• calculate with the differential and integral forms of Gauss' law;
• understand the electrostatic properties of conductors;
• use the method of images to calculate the electric potential;
• use the separation of variables technique to solve Laplace's equations;

• calculate the static electric field and bound charge distributions in dielectrics;
• calculate the static magnetic field in vacuum and in magnetic materials for a given time-independent current density;

• calculate time dependent behavior of electric and magnetic fields in vacuum using Maxwell's equation;
• calculate the energy and momentum carried by electromagnetic fields in vacuum.
