Nature of the course: This is a mostly descriptive survey of astronomy from the Sun to the outer galaxies. The course uses high-school level mathematics but does require reasoning and some calculation. You will need a small scientific calculator that you know how to use. PH1311 meets the lab science requirement.
In the lab sessions you will make measurements and use some real astronomical data to find out more about the universe. The lab exercises are designed for you to finish the write-up in the lab and hand it in as you leave. That's the plan, but there will be occasions where the experiment takes nearly the whole time and you will finish the writing at home. In that case, hand in the completed work on the following Wednesday - no later.
