Letters: Intelligent design AT SMU

Aren't they teaching at a Methodist school?

Re: "SMU intelligent design event protested – Dallas: Faculty members say holding conference on campus sends wrong message," Saturday Metro.

Professors at SMU are upset that the school is hosting an event because – in their intolerant, close-minded, bigoted view – it amounts to religious propaganda?

Forgive me for not having evolved to an advanced state of reason, but why are they teaching at a Methodist – i.e. Christian – university in the first place?

More importantly, I thought a university's role was to develop students' critical thinking skills by introducing opposing viewpoints, ideas and theories. Clearly, these so-called educators are merely indoctrinating students in their own religion of evolutionary materialism.

David Johnson, Plano

John Wesley must be turning over in his grave

That noise is John Wesley turning over in his grave that a school with a Methodist name has professors who do not want an intelligent design seminar on campus.

For crying out loud, what if a creation seminar featuring God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit visited? No wonder the world laughs at today's Christians.

It is time for real Methodists to stand up and get rid of the nonbelieving liberal teachers and preachers – or change the name from Southern Methodist University.

Ron Fisher, Dallas

These profs are anything but open-minded

This quote, from the supposedly open-minded professors on the Hilltop:

"They have no place on an academic campus with their polemics hidden behind a deceptive mask."

Gee, I thought with free speech and the open exchange of ideas in America, all viewpoints were welcome. I guess not to the if-you-don't-agree-with-us-you're-an-idiot crew at SMU.

Sadly, I'm an alumnus.
